John's Story

TRENTON - John Joseph Koulovatos, 84, died April 22, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Portland, April 9, 1930 the 6th child of 7 to Konstantino and Margaret (Malone) Koulovatos.

He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and Chevrus High School in Portland. He was an "all city" basketball player at Sacred Heart and a guard of Chevrus State Championship team of 1948. He was inducted into the Chevrus Hall of Fame in 2008. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Rich (DDE 820). After returning to civilian life, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Joan Drake August 8, 1953. They moved to Kittery where he was employed by General Motors Corp in Portland and Portsmouth, NH. Mary and John raised two beautiful daughters, Kathleen A. born May 29, 1954 and Karen M. born November 3, 1957. They later moved to Manchester, NH where John worked in the offices of General Motors until transferring to Ellsworth in 1960. In 1966 he left GM and was employed as Vice President at Liberty National Bank for 5 years and served on the Board of Directors of the Northern New England School of Banking. He purchased McNally's Restaurant and after 2 years he sold the restaurant and went to work for the U.S. Postal Department and retired as Asst. Postmaster of Ellsworth. John was an avid golfer and was the golf coach at Ellsworth High School for 4 years and a member of the Eastern Maine High School Basketball officials. He also spent 22 years as a sports caster for local radio stations.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; daughters, Kathleen Clarke and husband Robert of Falmouth, Karen Koulovatos and husband John Ewing of Portland; grandchild, Hannah Clarke of Boston. He was predeceased by his parents; six brothers and sisters.

Calling hours will be held 5:00-7:00 PM, Monday, April 28, 2014 with Prayers and Eulogy at 6:30 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St. Ellsworth. A funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM, Tuesday, April 29 at St. Joseph Church, 231 Main St. Ellsworth with Father Scott Mower Celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Memorial Processing Center, Framingham, MA 01701.
