John's Story

Text size

Cape Elizabeth - John Merrill Ingalls passed away on November 1, 2016. Born in Rockland, Maine, on March 28, 1939, John is the son of Elmer Sawyer Ingalls and Elizabeth Keyes Ingalls. John graduated from Bangor High School in 1957 and the University of Maine in 1961, where he was a proud member of Maine's most prolific basketball teams.
John married his bride of 55 years, Mary Leigh Soule Ingalls, in 1961 and relocated to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, after graduation. After two years of service that included a memorable experience during the Cuban missile crisis, John returned home to Maine to coach basketball at Waterville High School and continue his service with The Maine National Guard. In 1970, he accepted a sales position with Procter and Gamble and returned to his home town of Bangor. John's work ethic, sense of humor and tenacity resulted in plentiful success with Procter and Gamble and The National Guard where he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. After his daughter Heather's graduation from High School, John accepted a promotion with P&G as regional sales manager in 1986, landing him with an office in Quincy, Massachusetts, and a home in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. John enjoyed his life in Cape Elizabeth finding solace and joy in frequent trips to the ocean, season tickets to The Red Sox and all the great eateries in the Portland area.
After retirement, John and Mary purchased a summer home in Tenants Harbor, Maine, where they enjoyed many summers together, close to where they both began life in Rockland. In February of 2007, John suffered a severe traumatic brain injury after a fall at home. He was always very grateful for the great care he received at Maine Medical Center. He especially liked the laugh provided by one of his ICU nurses who told him when he returned to thank her after months of rehab that he looked much better with clothes on.
John leaves behind his wife Mary; son John Ingalls Jr. and wife Tammy of Goffstown, New Hampshire; son David Ingalls and wife Deborah Neuman of Bangor, Maine; daughter Heather Scripture and husband Dan Scripture of Bangor, Maine; five grandsons, Daniel Ingalls of Brooklyn, New York; Joshua Scripture of Bangor, Maine; Alex Ingalls of Plymouth, New Hampshire; Justin Scripture of Bangor, Maine and Weston Ingalls of Bangor, Maine.
