- John Wesley Gray, 70, died unexpectedly on February 12, 2018. He was born on August 29, 1947, in Bangor, Maine the son of Frank and Elsie Gray.
John joined the United States Army in 1967 and honorably served one tour in Vietnam. He was a Paratrooper in Company D, 2d Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division.
He met his wife, Sandy, in Bangor, Maine, shortly before he left for Vietnam and married her in Bangor while on furlough in 1968. In 1970 John returned from the war and he and Sandra settled in Waterville, Maine, where he worked as a police officer. They later returned to Bangor to start their family.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 50 years, Sandra Gray, are his children, Tanya Lavoie and husband, Tony Lavoie, of Columbus, Ohio, and Kristen Iarrobino and husband, Michael Iarrobino of Bangor, and three grandchildren, Lilly, Caroline, and Iona.
John was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, wordsmith, poet, and woodworker, and a gentle, generous soul that loved his family and friends fiercely. He will be deeply missed.
