Janice's Story

BAILEYVILLE and BANGOR - Janice, 81, with her family by her side, went to be with her Lord, on Nov. 6, 2015 in Bangor, after suffering a stroke.

Janice was born in Baileyville, the daughter of W. Raymond and Alice (Brown) Merritt on Feb. 12, 1934.

She graduated from St. Croix High School. That summer she married Rolfe Flood of Cooper. As Rolfe was in the U.S. Navy, they lived in New York, Connecticut, and Virginia. Later they moved back home to "Woodland," where they lived for 55 years, until moving to Calais and eventually Bangor.

Janice worked as secretary to the principal at Woodland Elementary School for seven years and retired after working at the Baileyville Town Office for 13 years.

She enjoyed attending the Rebekah Lodge, Sweet Adelines and sang at many weddings and funerals.

She was very active in her church serving as a teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Choir Director and was on several committees, including chair of Pastor Parish Relations Committee. She enjoyed cooking for and working on Church Suppers and attending the UMW.

Going on bus tours, traveling, spending summers at their cottage at Meddybemps Lake and taking loving care of their home where among Janice's greatest joys. She always found time for her family, especially her grandsons, Ben and Jacob.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her step-father, "Jimmy" Henderson, her brother, "Larry" Merritt and her daughters, Melanie and Shelley. She is survived by her husband, Rolfe; her daughter, Rhonda; grandsons, Benjamin Turner, and his wife Niki, and grandson Jacob Turner; Sisters-in-law Kathleen (Flood) Sadler and Lorraine (Day) Flood, both of Bangor; Brothers-in-law Calvin White, of Alexander and Ralph Flood, and his wife, Arlene, of Cooper; her nephews, Steven Merritt and his companion, Becky, of Vanceboro and Raymond Merritt of Eagle Lake; her niece, Laurie (Merritt) Larkin, and her husband, John, of Baileyville. She also will be missed by her cousins, Carl "Butch" Merritt, of Virginia; Edward McCray, and his wife, Eleanor, of Baileyville; Ethel Foley, of Gardner; and Marilyn (Foley) Neddeau, of Bucksport; Alan Brown of Presque Isle; Jane (Brown) Shepard, of Grand Lake Stream; and Jackie (Brown) Nelson, and her husband, Dwayne, of Menden, Massachusetts; and her aunt, Joyce Brown of Grand Lake Stream.

Janice will be missed by her family and all of her special friends.

A special thank you to staff, nurses and doctors of EMMC's ICU and Fifth Floor for their kind and loving care.

A Celebration of Janice's Life will be held at 11 am, Wednesday, November 11, at the People's United Methodist Church, on 86 Summit St., Baileyville, followed by a luncheon at the church after the committal. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the People's United Methodist Church.
