Janet's Story

VAN BUREN - Janet Marie Martin, 97, died peacefully in the morning of December 7, 2014, at a Van Buren healthcare facility. She was born June 27, 1917, in Hamlin, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Doucette) Morrow.

She was brought up on the Morrow potato farm in Hamlin which was made famous by Helen (Leidy) Hamlin in her book "Pine, Potatoes, and People". Janet married Robert M. Leidy, Helen's brother, in October 1941 before World War II. Robert Leidy was then killed in the War flying over Germany in 1944. During the war Janet worked for Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. After the War, Janet remarried to Lionel J. Martin in August 1948, became a housewife, and had five children. She was very active in the community volunteering in Boys Cub Scouts and then in Girl Scouting as a girl scout leader, field leader, and organizer for the Van Buren Girl Brownies, juniors, and cadets. After her family all left home she eventually completed her high school degree and took Gorham College summer courses studying adult education. She became an instructor for the Van Buren School District teaching English as a second language, Contract Bridge, and Arts & Crafts. She also participated in the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as their President. She also was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, and the Lions Club serving as Vice President. She loved playing golf and was on bowling teams bringing home many trophies. She enjoyed square dancing and cross country skiing. She also loved playing cards with friends especially poker and bridge. She and Lionel traveled around the country and spent some time in France. Her favorite time was spent at their summer cottage on Long Lake which for over 40 years was where you could find her and Lionel enjoying nature and visiting relatives and friends.

She is survived by: two sons, Colin Martin and his wife Theresa Morris of Falmouth and Stephen Martin of Limestone; three daughters, Janna Griffith and her husband Bill of Fernandina Beach, FL, Robin St. Germain and her husband Robert of Dayton, OH, and Marie Coyne and her husband Thaddeus of Indianapolis, IN; one granddaughter, Sarah Griffith; two grandsons, Conor Martin and William Griffith; three brothers, Armand Morrow of Bangor, Albert Morrow and his wife Alice of Van Buren, and Richard Morrow and his wife Robbie of Connecticut; and three sisters, Lorette of Colorado, Aurora of Bangor, and Cecile of Florida. Besides her parents, Janet is predeceased by her husband Lionel, married for 62 years, who passed away in November 2010; two brothers, Rene and Larry; and four sisters, Celia, Ann, Sandra and Rita.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family 6-8 p.m. Friday and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. Spring internment will be in Grande Riviere Cemetery.
