Irena's Story

VAN BUREN - Irena Lee Cyr, 90, died peacefully Sunday, May 24, 2015 at a Van Buren healthcare center. She was born February 13, 1925 in St. Basile, NB, Canada, a daughter of the late Alphee and Eugenia (Lajoie) Lee. She was lovingly raised by her mother and her late step-father, Albert Martin.

Irena was a high school graduate of the convent in St. Basile, NB, and completed the registered nurse program with Hôtel Dieu, Edmundston, NB. She worked as a registered nurse with Borderview for many years and previously worked with Cyr Hospital, Grand Falls, NB, Canada. She also worked at the first hospital in Van Buren. She was a former member of the Maine Nurses' Assoc. and New Brunswick Nurses' Assoc. and a member of the Daughters of Isabella and American Legion, Post #49, Ladies Auxiliary.

Widowed at a young age, she concentrated her talents, time and love with her family, friends and being a caring and loving nurse. She was very humble and selfless and loved by all. She had many friends, loved to play cards, go to her camp on Long Lake, and enjoyed her family to the fullest.

She is survived by: four children, Muriel "Muz" Parent and her husband John of Van Buren, Joan "JoJo" Cyr of Southbridge, MA, Lee "Bill" Cyr and his wife Michelle of Gorham, and Nancy Parent and her husband Patrick of Limerick; a sister, Carmen Gervais of Bucyrus, OH; three brothers, Roger Martin and his wife Rolande of St. Basile, NB, Canada, Jean Guy Martin and his wife Gisele of St. Jerome, QC, Canada, and Al "Bébé" Martin and his wife Ginette of Sabattus; seven grandchildren, Jason Parent and his wife Kimberlee, Kristy Dube and her husband Brian, Kathryn Serra and her husband Jason, Danielle Cyr and her fiancé Dwight Wilson, Dominic Parent, Alec Parent and Baxter Parent; three great grandchildren, Christopher Parent, Kallee Parent, and Allison Serra; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and step father, Irena is predeceased by her husband of 22 years, Aurele Cyr in 1971, and three brothers, Gerald and Fred Lee and Reginald Martin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at St. Bruno-St. Remi Catholic Church, Van Buren. Relatives and friends may greet the family 9:30 - 10:45 AM, Saturday morning at the church. Burial will follow in St. Bruno Cemetery. Arrangements are a service of Lajoie Funeral Home, 118 High St., Van Buren. In lieu of flowers, donations in Irena's name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
