CASTINE - Harold Raymond Quass, born August 4, 1916 in Independence, IA died unexpectedly on Saturday June 28, 2014. He lived the majority of his life in Presque Isle, ME and the last two years with his daughter in Castine, ME.
The son of Charles and Meta Nehls Quass, he graduated from high school in 1933 and worked on the family farm in Independence for several years. He enlisted in 1941 in the U.S. Army Air Corps and completed airplane mechanics courses at Chanute Field, IL. Stationed at Presque Isle Air Force Base during WWII, he met future wife Dorothy Helen King. After service abroad and the end of WWII, he spent three years in the Reserves.
Harold attended Gorham State Teacher's College after years as a mechanic and became an instructor at Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. He was proud of his family, his work, his home on Maple Street in Presque Isle, and his charter membership in creating the Presque Isle Airport Museum. He was a 60 year plus member of the Grant Memorial Methodist Church, a longtime member of the Church Mens' Club and was known for his scrambled egg breakfasts. He was a 40 year plus member of Trinity Masonic Lodge 130, a member of the American Legion and the VFW. A man of unusual physical strength, he loved the outdoors and all wildlife. He was always generous and ready to help anyone in need.
Predeceased by his parents, his three Iowa siblings Edward Quass, Doris Greeley, Ruth Marinus, his wife Dorothy H. Quass, and son Tamlin N. Quass, he leaves his daughter Paula H. Dunfee of Castine, ME, his granddaughter Heather L. Dunfee and husband George W. Layng of Westfield, MA, his granddaughter Bethany Dunfee Pierce and husband Tom F. Pierce of Freeport, ME and 5 great-grandchildren: Emmalynn Pierce, Aidan D. Layng, Macallan D. Layng, Elias D. Layng, and Eva F.D. Layng. Surviving him also are many Iowa nieces and nephews including Robert and Carol Quass and many Northern Maine relatives including a special brother and sister Edward and Barbara Hews.
A double interment service for both Harold and his son Tamlin N. Quass (died January 21, 2013) will be held at Fairmont Cemetery in Presque Isle on Sunday July 27 at 2:00pm, followed by a reception at Grant Memorial Methodist Church in Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Harold and Dorothy Quass Scholarship Fund at Northern Maine Community College.
