St. Augustine, FL, and Presque Isle - Gregory H. Smith, 63, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017, at a Jacksonville, Florida, health care facility from a brief illness. He was born on January 25, 1954, in Mars Hill, the son of Herschel and Elizabeth (Weeks) Smith. Greg was co-owner of Smiths Farm Inc. and Smith Packing.
Greg graduated from University of Maine, Orono, with a B.S. degree in Agribusiness and was a member of Phi ETA Kappa fraternity. After graduating college he joined his father on the family farm and along with his cousin Lance, they built a team at Smiths Farm, that he thoroughly enjoyed working with. Greg had a passion for agriculture and was a pioneer in the industry. From the early years in FFA, to Farm Family of the year, Chairman of the Board of MPG, UMPI foundation, and a founding member of the Nordic Heritage Ski Club, Greg was always known to go about things with passion and excellence. He had an amazing sense of humor, kindness, and generosity and always enjoyed entertaining his family, friends, and colleagues with his ability to tell stories. The things that gave him most pleasure in life were spending time with his family and playing seniors' golf with his dad, Herschel.
He is survived by his parents of Mars Hill, his wife, Stephanie "Taffy" (Johnston) Smith (the love of his life) of St. Augustine, FL, his son, Zach and his wife Alisha Smith of Westfield, ME, and his daughter, Kylan Smith of Christiansburg, VA. His sisters and their husbands; Pamela Coffey and G. William Coffey of O'Fallon, MO, Cynthia Jackson and Glenn Jackson of Brewer, ME, Julie Hooker and Gail Hooker of Littleton, ME, Carol Yaeger and Andrew Yaeger of Westfield, ME, Jennifer Albertson and Charles Albertson, Sr. of Bridgewater, ME, and Chrystal Albertson and Charles Albertson, Jr. of Westfield, ME. He is also survived by his two very special granddaughters Lydia and Camrynn Smith of Westfield, ME, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Marshall Cemetery, Westfield, ME.
