FRANKLIN, TN - Grace Dudley Griffin died peacefully on July 6, 2015 at age 88. She was born in Bangor, Maine on July 10, 1926 and grew up dividing her time between Bangor and Phillips Lake just outside of Bangor. She would ice skate on the lake in winter, swim in the summer and excelled as a student during the school year. Her mother died when she was quite young and she was raised by her father to be a strong, independent woman. She attended the University of Maine where she was president of Phi Mu Sorority and where she received a business degree. She then went out into the world where she broke many "glass ceilings," even before the term was invented.
Grace spent the majority of her career as an executive with Continental Airlines and she kept in touch with many of her co-workers from Continental Airlines throughout the years. She later worked for Max Factor. She lived in Houston, TX, Denver, CO and Manhattan Beach, CA. She later moved to Nashville to be near family and spent the last two years in Franklin, TN.
Grace was smart, kind, full of class, stoic and independent. She loved animals, Maine, Napa Valley, people from all walks of life, and a good glass of wine. She traveled extensively, her two favorite countries being Denmark and Greece. She was a consummate reader and up to the very end, kept up with international news.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, Dudley Ralph Griffin and Louise Nickerson Griffin; her two sisters, Elinor Louise Griffin and Lois Griffin Barnes.
Grace is survived by her nephew, Stephen Dudley (Susan) Barnes and her niece, Nancy Barnes (Michael) McMillen and 5 second nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to: her community of friends and dog-walkers at Arden Place in Nashville, especially Chris Browning who adopted her beloved dog, Sophie; her Continental Airlines friends, Phyllis Green, Grace Healthcare Facility, Willow Brook Hospice, and the staff at Belvedere Commons in Franklin, TN.
A memorial celebration of Grace's life will be held on what would have been her 89th birthday, Friday, July 10, 2015 at three o' clock in the afternoon at Brentwood Roesch-Patton Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of choice that protects animals.
