Geraldine's Story

Geraldine M. Saunders, fondly known as Gerry, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2016, in Winterport, after living a full, wonderful life. Born in Leeds, in 1926, she is the daughter of John Russell Pettengill Sr. and Marion (Burgess) Pettengill.

Gerry attended Monmouth Academy, class of 1943, where she met Richard F. Saunders, her best friend and loving husband of 65 years. Together they went on to travel around the country and the world with their three children living in Leeds, Orono, Old Town, and Winterport; Ithaca, New York; Boxford, Massachusetts; Kabul, Afghanistan; Nairobi, Kenya; Juba, Sudan; and Lusaka, Zambia.

Gerry is a graduate of Bliss Business College and a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Gerry was known for her incredible kindness, wisdom, generosity and wit. Her family, travel, the 'Saturday Nighters', books and thought provoking discussions were an important part of her life.

Gerry was predeceased by her husband, Richard Saunders; her parents; son, Kent P. Saunders; brother, John Russell Pettengill, Jr., his wife Nedra; brother, Gilbert Pettengill and his wife Sandra.

Gerry is survived by her children Jane S. McCarthy of Winterport and Ross O. Saunders, his wife Ann of Saco; six grandchildren Molly, Caitlin, Quincy, Adelle, Alana and Reece; her brother, Rodney A. Pettengill, sister-in-law Shirley of Leeds; seven nieces and nephews, including two very special nieces Wendy Douglas and Julie Wright.

As per Gerry's wishes, there will be no services until her ashes are joined by those of her husband, when they will be together forever.
