- Gerald Raymond Holmes, 92, passed away peacefully January 25, 2017, at a local healthcare facility after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born November 23, 1924, in Good Corner, Florenceville, NB, Canada, the son of Donald and Emma Holmes.
Gerald attended schools in Florenceville, NB, and graduated from "the school of hard knocks". He moved to Houlton, Maine in 1946, and became a citizen of the United States in 1952. He was a salesman, selling Mack and GMC trucks and Hews truck bodies all over New England and selling cars, trucks and boats as owner of Easton Motors. For the last 40 years he was owner of Holmes Construction Company with his son, Larry. A few of his proudest achievements were development of the South Shore of Drews Lake, building a suspension bridge at Bowlin Pond Camps over the east branch of the Penobscot river and moving a few of the largest barns in the area. He was a life member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks #835, Masonic Lodge #96 and the Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Elva and Jean; and brothers, Winifred and Wendell. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Grendell Holmes; their children, Larry (Linda) Holmes of New Limerick and New Harbor, Lynne Holmes of Lake Worth, FL, Nancy (Michael) Nelson of Holmdel, NJ, and Leslie (Greg) Schools of Littleton; five grandchildren, Samuel Holmes, Lauren (Erik) Dukes, Sarah (Jonathan) Jackson, Anna (Lucas) Belanger, Laura Schools; and great-grandson, Asa Jackson; sisters, Glenna (Reginald) Richard, Wanda (Gerald) Burtt; and many dear nieces and nephews, including Mitchell Holmes, "one of his favorite sons".

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Matt Cowan PA-C, Dr. Sussman and Dr. Abouleish; and to Hospice of Aroostook and the nurses at Madigan Estates for their compassionate care during the last two weeks.
