EAST MILLINOCKET - George Leroy Michaud, Jr., 84, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Bangor, after a period of declining health. He was born May 2, 1931 in East Millinocket, the son of George L. and Marie E. (Michaud) Michaud.

Leroy grew up in East Millinocket, and was a graduate of Schenck High School, class of 1948. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy right after graduation, on June 15, 1948, and trained as a radio operator. Leroy's assignments took him to San Diego, Japan, Korea, and Panama before being discharged June 13, 1952. Most of his tour was aboard the USS Eldorado, but he did spend six months aboard an LST. He was very proud of his military service, and of being a Korean War Vet.

Leroy returned to East Millinocket where he went on to complete a 39 year career at the Great Northern Paper Company mill in East Millinocket. He also managed the Standard Electric store in Millinocket for more than 5 years before volunteering to drive for Lynx Transportation for eight years.

Leroy is survived by his wife of 61 years, June (Bacon) Michaud of East Millinocket; a daughter, Nancy and significant other, Matt; a granddaughter, Michaela and her husband James; two grandsons, Aaron and Adam; and a very special great grandson, Harvey, who Leroy was determined to live long enough to meet, and, after doing so this past Christmas, led Leroy to remark that "...it was best Christmas ever!" In addition to his parents, Leroy was predeceased by two sisters, Theresa Northrup and her husband Brantford, Betty Rush and her husband Nathan, and a special nephew, Brian Rush.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 A.M. Saturday, January 23 at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Peter's Catholic Church, 58 Cedar St., East Millinocket with the Rev. Bruce Siket, pastor, presider. Gifts in memory of Leroy may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462, or to the Maine Veteran's Home Activity Fund, 44 Hogan Road, Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home, East Millinocket.
