STONINGTON - George Ruthen Hagerthy Sr., 82, died January 10, 2015. He was born May 20, 1932, in Seal Harbor, the son of Elmer E. and Gladys (McKay) Hagerthy.
George attended Otter Creek Schools. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. George lived in Bucksport for many years, where he operated a small farm on Rt. 46, and worked as a woodsman and pulp truck driver. He moved to Little Deer Isle and the Stonington area in 1972. There he worked as a clam digger and operated a lobster boat with his wife, Pat for several years. George enjoyed working on cars and small engines and could always be seen around his workshop.
George is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia A. (Lacey) Hammett Hagerthy; 3 sons, Michael Hammett, George R. "Peewee" Hagerthy Jr. and his wife, Tammy, all of Stonington, and Allan N. Hagerthy and fiancee, Janice Hardy, of Sunshine; 2 daughters, Crystal (Hammett) Colson and husband, James, of Elliot and Margaret Hagerthy and husband, John Gibbons, of Bass Harbor; twin sisters, Helen Gilbert of Bucksport and Isma (Brown) Parkhurst of Cumberland Center; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Elmer and Alan Hagerthy; and grandchildren, Dawn Robbins and Ayden Hagerthy.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015, at the Galilean Gospel Temple Church of Stonington. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, at Otter Creek Cemetery, Otter Creek. Arrangements by Acadia Burial & Cremation Direct, 248 State Street, Ellsworth.
