CAPE ELIZABETH - Frederick C. Emery, Jr. of Cape Elizabeth, ME, died on September 4, 2015, at Gorham House, Gorham, ME, after a gallant and courageous battle with ALS. He was born on November 7, 1947, in Bangor, ME, the oldest son of Dr. Frederick C. and Mary M. Emery, who predeceased him.

Rick graduated from Bangor High School in 1965, and from Colby College in 1969, then served in the United States Army for two years. He graduated from Cornell Law School in 1974. Rick began his legal career as a law clerk for Judge John F. O'Mara in Rochester, NY. In 1975, he joined the Monroe County Public Defender's Office in Rochester, then moved to the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of New York in 1982. In 1989, he returned to Maine as an Assistant US Attorney for the District of Maine in Portland, where he remained until his retirement in 2012. During his career, he was involved in many areas of prosecution for the Federal government, among them drug enforcement, fraud, tax evasion, and bankruptcy.

Rick was a lifelong amateur athlete, playing varsity sports in high school and college, competing in softball leagues in Portland, and coaching baseball teams in Cape Elizabeth. He loved exploring the Maine coast, particularly the Mount Desert area, and was a generous, long term supporter of Friends of Acadia. He was also a faithful supporter of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, attending the Tuesday Night Classical concerts for many years. Another of his favorite pastimes was dining at the many fine restaurants through the state.

Rick was a courteous, traditional gentleman who insisted on holding doors for any woman he encountered. He loved his home, and was a warm and gracious host to family and friends. He was supremely organized, with meticulous attention to detail, and was renowned for the thoroughness of both his professional and personal records. He was equally meticulous in the care of his home landscape.

He is survived by his daughter, Baye Emery Larsen, her husband, Michael, of Darien, CT, and her mother, Alicia Ritts Orrick, of Greenwich, CT; by grandchildren, Chase, Lilly, and Eloise Larsen, also of Darien, CT; by siblings Joan Ross of Yarmouth, James Emery of Northampton, MA, David Emery of Freeport, and Susan Emery of Stetson; by nephew Arnold Ross and his family, of Woburn, MA; and by many cousins.

He is also survived by the love of his life, Carolyn Mowers, of Cape Elizabeth; her children, Scott Farley of Cadillac, MI, and Jennifer Mowers of Cape Elizabeth; and her grandchildren Brett, Ben, Bryan, and Audrina. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Russel Ross, of Cape Elizabeth.

An informal celebration of Rick's life will be held on October 3, 2015, from 2 to 4 PM at the Hobbs Hospitality Center, 230 Cottage Rd, South Portland, ME. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot in Lamoine, ME.

The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Gorham House and at LifeChoice Hospice for their compassionate and caring support throughout Rick's stay.
