Frances V. McFarland

January 30, 2019 - February 20, 1924

Frankfort - Frances V. McFarland passed peacefully with family at her side on January 30, 2019, at the age of 94. Frances was born on February 20, 1924, in Winterport, Maine to Philip and Mabel (Neville) Goodnow.
She attended Nasson College, graduated from Eastern Maine General Hospital School of Nursing and became a nurse in the U.S. Army's Cadet Nurse Corps.
Frances married Guy C. McFarland in 1947 and settled in Frankfort where they became active in their community. She was a charter member of The American Legion Post 138 Argonne in Winterport; and served as a deacon, choir member, organist, and secretary of the church guild at the First Congregational Church for more than 25 years. She also was the board secretary for the Waldo Pierce Reading Room for two decades. Frances had a sixteen-year career in industrial and home health nursing in Waldo County.
Frances was an avid reader and a wonderful cook. " Mamie's" chocolate mayonnaise cake was a family favorite! She was always warm, caring, and interested in all that was happening.
She truly enjoyed life, her family and her many friends. She was very loved and will be greatly missed.
Frances was predeceased by her husband, Guy, in 1993 and daughter, Diane (Libby) Hammond in 2013. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Freese; son, Doug and daughter-in-law, Kathy McFarland; son-in-law, Charles Hammond; sister-in-law, Gail Day; brother-in-law, John McFarland; grandchildren: Shannon and John Nichols, Angela and Joe Cahill, Amy and Patrick Johnson, Doug and Dena McFarland, and Matt Libby; great-grandchildren: Ethan, Alden, Benjamin, Harrison, Jackson, Samuel, Sullivan and Elizabeth.
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 16, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church in Frankfort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 146, Frankfort, ME 04438 to help repair the church steeple. This would please Frances as the church was a big part of her life. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home and Cremation Services. mitchelltweedie-young.com

Francis and Guy and my parents, Barbara and Herman Reed, began married life as neighbors in 1947. Though I was very small when we moved away, Francis’ warmth made a strong impression on me that has lasted a lifetime. She was a ray of sunshine and l was blessed to know her.

As a friend of Diane, I often heard how wonderful you were and how proud you were of your children and grandchildren. I heard about your many drives, luncheons and outings. I know Diane is ready for you in heaven. God bless you and your family.

I'm saddened to see Frances recently passed away. I fondly remember the years she and my mom shared. Work, town and neighbor stories galore shared between these two. I can hear ma hollering upstairs to her now, Yohoooooo, Frances! in a very big voice! I'm sure she'll hear that same Yohoo as she searches for her old friends in heaven. Our sincerest sympathy to her family and friends as you all gather to celebrate her life.

I’m very sorry for the loss of your love one. May you find comfort in this time of great need. The best source of strength and love that I found whenever I'm dealing with the greatest “enemy, death” is God. He guarantees us that our dead love ones “will live.... and rise up”. May you also find comfort in these words. - 1 Corinthians 15:26; Isaiah 26:19. JW.org
