Evelyn's Story

NEWPORT - Evelyn T. Roussin, 87, died June 16, 2014 at a Pittsfield hospital, with her family by her side, following a long illness. She was born in Lewiston, May 8, 1927, the daughter of Virgil and Mary (Hartford) Thompson.

Evelyn graduated from Edward Little High School in the class of 1946, she than attended Nasson College graduating in 1950 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Home Economics. Evelyn was married to Raymond L. Roussin who predeceased her on Aug. 2, 1972. Evelyn was employed at Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield as a dietitian for several years. She also was employed at MSAD # 48 school system as a substitute teacher for many years. Evelyn was the first woman to be elected to the Newport Board of Selectman a position she held for many years. She was a member of the Newport Budget Committee for many years, a member of the Newport Board of Appeals, member of the Newport Annual Festival Association, member of the Newport Library Association Board, member of the Newport Historical Society, and a member of the SHARE program in Newport. Evelyn also belonged as a member and past Secretary of the Newport Business and Professional Woman's Club, a member of the Newport Woman's Club, a member and past president of the Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Auxiliary of Newport, member of the board of the Nasson College Alumni Association, member of the Sebasticook Valley Hospital Auxiliary, and a member of the Lakeside Ladies Club.

Evelyn is survived by one son and his wife, Timothy R. and Patricia Roussin of Newport, one daughter, Gail E. Roussin of Lyman, one granddaughter, Alica Roussin and her mother, Luane Roussin, both of Newport, four step-grandchildren; Robert Gerry and children, Justin Gerry and fiancée, Jessica Kneeland and family, Julia and her husband, Jason Brooks and family, Benjamin Gerry and fiancée, Cara Fraser, three sisters-in-law, June Thompson of Auburn, Marjorie Barcus of Altamonte Springs, FL, Joan "Pixie" Roussin of Jacksonville, FL, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her son, Michael R. Roussin on March 26, 2005, and a brother, Raymond Thompson.

Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High Street, Newport. Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery, Newport with Rev. Ellen Bridge officiating. In lieu of flowers friends may make memorial donations to the charity of your choice.
