Eugene's Story

Text size

Bangor - Eugene Emerson Dawes, who was born July 19, 1943, passed away on Sept. 7, 2016, in his sleep after fighting pancreatic cancer..
Gene was born in Jonesport and graduated from Jonesport High School on June 15, 1961. Shortly after that he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After his service, he moved to Portland and became a surgical tech at Maine Medical, and later a tech at Mercy Hospital. He loved these jobs best of any he had. After doing this for a few years, he found that standing in one place for many hours took a tole on his feet and legs, and the doctor advised him to change jobs or face serious health problems down the road.
He then moved on to security at the Portland Expo. There he had the opportunity to meet and talk with many celebrities from professional wrestlers to music stars of all types.
Gene was an excellent artist and when an opportunity arose for a security position at the Portland Art Museum he took it with an opportunity for art classes. Here he also met and was able to talk with a number of celebrities, such as Vincent Price and Andrew Wyeth.
After more than 20 years in Portland, he decided to come back to Bangor. He got a job as security at the Bucksport mill, and spent several years there before deciding to work on his own as a handyman in Bangor. He worked full time at this until his retirement.
Gene always had a great sense of humor. As children growing up he always kept us entertained. He still retained that until three days before his death.
A very special thanks to Rose, a long-time friend and caregiver. He received excellent care in her hands.
Gene is survived by an older bother, Almon Emerson and his wife, Nancy, of Bangor; two younger brothers, Lee Emerson and wife, Mary, of Florida and Derwin Emerson and wife, Doreen, of Charleston; and a sister, Charlee Davis and husband, Mac, of Bangor.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Jonesport. He requested no memorial service.
