Ethel Patricia's Story
- On this day, Friday, November 3, 2017, a bright and promising light was taken from our family when our mother, Ethel Patricia 'Paddy' McVey, 84, passed peacefully at Cummings Health Care Facility in Howland.
Paddy was born on September 7, 1933, in Bangor, the daughter of Michael E. and Lucille E. (Lydick) Beagan. She was the loving wife of the late John H. McVey, Jr., and was also the proud and loving mother to John, Kevin, Lulu, Mark, and their families.
"Nan" was proud of each of her grandchildren and when healthier, travelled to see their activities. She was a family-oriented person and fond of all of her nieces and nephews. She was especially proud of being Godmother to Susan (Beagan) Berry, John E. Mackin, Jr., Josey Mackin, and Kaylee McVey.
"Paddy", as her Irish father named her, was a wonderful homemaker. She enjoyed baking molasses cookies for her grandchildren.
She enjoyed travelling to Las Vegas for 15 consecutive years. Her most memorable trip was when her entire family joined her after the passing of her husband, John.
Paddy was very proud of her Irish heritage and the Beagan family farm on Donagh Road on Prince Edward Island. In her younger days she loved to dance with her husband, John, and brother, Mike. She also loved to cruise around in her vehicles, one of her favorites being her 1975 Caprice Classic convertible. Her many trips to Las Vegas produced some treasured family moments.
She also found time to be a past Penobscot County Bail Commissioner and Justice of the Peace.
Paddy was predeceased by her beloved husband, John H. McVey, Jr., in 2002. She is survived by her four children, John and his wife, Joanna of Fort Meyers, Florida, Kevin McVey, Lucille "Lulu" LeGassey and her husband, Martin, and Mark McVey, all of Millinocket. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Mackin, her brother, Michael Beagan, and their spouses.
Paddy also leaves behind her eleven grandchildren, Martin, Matthew, and Molly LeGassey, Shawn Michael, Melissa, Kyle, Kacey, Kaylee, Katie, and Koby McVey; seven great-grandchildren, Brady, Connor, Lauren, and Levi LeGassey, and Annibel, Braeden, and Ella McVey; and many special nieces and nephews. Paddy also leaves behind a very special great nephew, John Mackin III. She will always remember her special family friends, Paul and Brenda Mott.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Cummings Healthcare in Howland, as well as the Beacon Hospice team.
At Paddy's request, there will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, November 9, at Christ the Divine Mercy Parish, St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 19 Colby Street, Millinocket, with the Rev. Bruce Siket, pastor, presider. Gifts in memory of Paddy may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org. Arrangements are by Lamson Funeral Home. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
