Elwood's Story

Text size

Dover-Foxcroft - Elwood (Woody) R. McCleary, 96, went home on December 9, 2017. He was the loving and devoted husband of Hannah (Dot) Harris McCleary. Woody was born on November 29, 1921 in Tracy New Brunswick Canada, the son of the late Hazen O. and Mabel (Dewitt) McCleary.
Elwood served in the Prince Edward Island Highlanders during WWII. After returning from the war he met the love of his life in the spring of '46 and married on September 24, 1946. They lived in McAdam, N.B., for a couple of years, then followed his job on the CP Railroad to Brownville Junction, Maine, residing near his parents and the station. After 40 years he retired in November 1981.
Woody was a true family man and always put his family first. Some of his favorite times were spent in the "picnic house" with relatives and friends. Thanksgiving Day and Christmas was the highlight of the year. Woody loved to tell stories and was a natural. Young and old loved to sit and listen, he captured his audience with his deep voice and silly antics.
Woody was a hard worker on and off his job. He was always there when someone needed a helping hand, never expecting anything in return. The most caring of men.
Woody was predeceased by his parents and five sisters: Mildred, Mae, Lena, Alice and Eileen.
Survived by his loving wife "Dorth" of 71 years, and sister Joan and husband Galen Larson. Also survived by his children: Gaye Richard of Dover-Foxcroft, Gary McCleary and partner Donna Grant of Schoodic, Sherri and Jimmy Bishop of Milo, Cindy and husband Charlie Herbest of Milo, Paul and wife Gail McCleary of Brownville Junction. Grandchildren: Angel, Marc and wife Jamie, Tara, Tiffany and fiancé Steve, Dustin, Cheana and husband Tony, Kendra and friend Cody, and Christopher. Great-grandchildren: Shelby, Brady, Lexi, Hannah, Alice, Mia, Charlotte and Tanner, and several nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank Beacon Hospice and Hibbard Nursing home for their services. A special thank you to some wonderful women who we were blessed with in the care of Elwood over the past 2 years: Anne Weston, Dina Tuscano, Amanda Dewitt, and Joanna Wilkins.
There will be a Celebration Of Life in the New Year.
