- Ellen Chase, 96, died November 14, 2016, at her residence. She was born December 9, 1919, in Corinna, a daughter of M. Burleigh and Hazel (Craig) Kimball. She graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1938, where she was a proud member of the girls' basketball team.
She married Irving Chase on September 1, 1939. She was a member of the "greatest generation" growing up during the depression. Ellen accompanied her husband to various military posts during the United States preparation for World War II. After the war, she and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm in Dixmont until 1957. She later worked as a cashier at Bud's Shop and Save Supermarket in Dexter for a number of years. After retiring Ellen and Irving enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada, as well as many European countries. Ellen was a longtime member of the High Street Church here in Newport.
Ellen is survived by 2 sons, Ronald and wife Edna of Durham, and Steven and wife Brenda of Lee; a sister, Doris and husband Fred "Bob" Elston of Etna; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a special cousin Reta Corson of Wolfboro, NH, and her Bingo friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Irving, a brother Edgar Kimball, and sister Hilda Emerson.
Friends may call at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, from 9 a.m. until the time of funeral at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 17th 2016, Pastor Al Worden will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Newport. Memorial donations may be made to the Newport Cultural Center, 154 Main Street, Newport, ME 04953.
