FORT FAIRFIELD - Elizabeth "Betty" Dexter, passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, May 26, 2015 at a Mars Hill health care facility. She was born in Tilley, New Brunswick, the last child of Warren and Josephine (Hannan) Dexter.
Betty had many fond memories of her childhood in Tilley. She attended the one room school and taught there after graduation from high school. During her years at Andover (New Brunswick) High School, she worked at Ann's Tea Room, also known within the family as "Ann's Finishing School." She attended Pond's Secretarial School, Fredericton and worked for one year in New Jersey. She moved to Fort Fairfield in 1954 and worked at Nightingale Implement Company for several years. In 1962 she was naturalized as a United States citizen and began working at Loring Air Force Base. She worked in Civilian Personnel until she retired in 1992. Always interested in social issues, in her later years she became a committed pacifist. For several years she was a regular participant in the weekly peace vigils on the bridge in Presque Isle and in Dunedin, Florida.
Betty is survived by her nieces and nephews and their spouses, Catherine Bishop and Russell Roberts of Ottawa, Nancy and Murray Martinson of Mississauga, Ontario, Lynn and Peter Soucy of Portland and Rockland, Ken Reynolds of Fort Fairfield, Debra and Dave Scott of Salt Lake City, Ellen Breeze of Salt Lake City, Patricia Reynolds Regan and Kevin Regan of Lisbon Falls, Lori Reynolds of Centerville, Utah, Jay and Karen Reynolds of Fort Fairfield, Eva Rideout of Grand Falls, N.B., Elizabeth Dexter and Ed Wiley of Bristol, N.B., Elaine and Claude Bilodeau of Montreal, and Warren Dexter of Grand Falls, N.B., many beloved great and great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Lena Bishop, Jean Reynolds, George Dexter, and an infant brother, Warren Dexter; three nephews, David Dexter, Daniel Dexter, and David Reynolds.
Friends may call Sunday May 31, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will be conducted Monday June 1, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Fr. Raymond Morency officiating. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the VFW Paul Lockhart Post Number 6187, Presque Isle Street, Fort Fairfield.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Betty's name be made to Halfway House Pet Rescue, P.O. Box 488, Caribou, Maine 04736. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
