Eleanor's Story

Text size

Orono - Eleanor S. Walker, 83, affectionately known as Ellie, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Dirigo Pines in Orono. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 14, 1934, the daughter of Anna and George Jarck.
Before Ellie married, she worked as a stewardess for Pan American Airlines, where she was a self-proclaimed survivor of the Bermuda Triangle.
In 1958, Ellie married James W. Walker in St. Albans, Long Island. As a military wife, she adapted easily to moving to different military bases as a result of Jim's multiple assignments. While stationed in Southern CA, Ellie worked at Disneyland. In 1965, Ellie and Jim settled in Augusta, Maine, where they raised their children and became very involved in the community. Ellie was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and a sorority sister in Beta Sigma Phi. Ellie held a variety of jobs throughout her time in Augusta including employment at Sears Roebuck, waitressing at the Holiday Inn, and being a Real Estate Agent. In 1984 she became an RN and then worked for over 20 years at Augusta General Hospital, later Kennebec Valley Medical Center. In addition, she was a notary public and joyfully married more than a dozen couples. Ellie volunteered at the election polls for many years.
Ellie had a gregarious personality, fond of company and social events. She truly loved and embraced any new adventure. Ellie enjoyed being physically active by playing tennis, walking, and riding her bicycle throughout the neighborhood with her many friends. She took pride in her backyard enjoying her multiple flower gardens and her pond. Ellie had a passion for traveling, she and her husband enjoyed many vacations in Florida. She had a flair for fashion and decorating, loving shopping and antiquing.
To Ellie's children, she was their "rock", devoting herself to supporting them in all of their countless activities and adventures. Ellie was so proud of her grandchildren. Mimi Ellie was silly, fun and loved spoiling each of them. Ellie had many friends, and she always looked forward to her weekly breakfast group and her "girls" trips to Disney World.
Ellie lived life to the fullest with a positive easy going attitude.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Jim, and her son-in-law, Charles Mackenzie.
Ellie is survived by her children, Wendy Mackenzie from Warren, Mary "Kissy" Walker and her partner, Kristie, of Orono, Kevin Walker and his wife, Serena, from Swans Island; two step sons, James Walker and his wife, Lyn Jhoy, and William Walker and his wife, Lisa, all of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Matthew Mackenzie and his wife, Erin, Alex Mackenzie, and Marshall, Shepard, Josephine, Oakley and Isaiah Walker; a brother, George Jarck, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Annandale, NJ, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Dirigo Pines and Beacon Hospice for the care and compassion they showed to Ellie and the family during her time with them.
