Eleanor's Story

Text size

Lisbon - Eleanor Brown Curtis, 89, of Lisbon, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at her home at The Lamp Memory Care Center, after a long illness. She was born on September 19, 1928, in Princeton, Maine, the youngest daughter of the late C. Elwood and Marjorie (Mason) Brown.
Eleanor graduated from Husson College in 1947. She played basketball on the first women's basketball team and also met her first husband, Dwight Thorsen, while at college. They were married on February 3, 1951. They lived in Bangor for a few years and eventually settled in Hancock, Maine. They had six children together and enjoyed having picnics on Hancock Point and playing cards with friends. She was an active member of the Hancock Women's Club for many years. She and the family attended and became members of the Union Congregational Church in Hancock and appreciated the close knit community of the church membership.  Eleanor was a homemaker for many years and was a wonderful seamstress. She enjoyed sewing and made clothes, gifts and fun Halloween customs for her children. Eleanor started her employment for the State of Maine in 1972 processing unemployment claims for the Department of Labor. Eleanor and Dwight were married for 24 years until Dwight's death in 1975.
Eleanor was introduced to Carlton "Ike" Curtis by her son-in-law and she and Ike were married on May 13, 1979. Eleanor found a true blessing in her marriage to Ike. They spent the next 18 years together camping by the ocean in Sullivan at Mountainview Campground, attending Ike's 10th Mountain 86 reunions around the country and enjoying their lives together. Eleanor retired from the State in 1989 and she and Ike became snowbirds, living in Florida during the winter and coming back to Maine for the summers.
After Ike's death in 1996, Eleanor moved back to Ellsworth in 1997. She volunteered for the Eastern Area Agency on Aging as a Senior Companion. She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and playing cards with friends. She was pleased to be recognized as a longstanding member of the Union Congregational Church in Hancock.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Sally Swanson of Yarmouth; son, Dwight Thorsen and wife, Gayla, of Gouldsboro; daughter, Marge Severance and husband, Tom, of Lisbon; daughter, Dawn Ray of Ellsworth; daughter, Jean McGraw of St. Petersburg, FL; daughter, Trish Thorsen and husband, Josh Lupher, of Greene; stepdaughter, Carolyn Caron and husband, John of Hyannis, MA; stepdaughter, Mary Evelyn and husband, Bob, of Summerfield, FL; and sister, Sara Pratt of Windsor. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Eleanor was predeceased by her sister, Florence "Fonnie" Bailey; and stepson, Joseph Curtis.
Eleanor will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the staff at the Lamp Memory Care Center where she resided for the past seven years. Eleanor's family is grateful for the wonderful care and dedication that the staff provided to Eleanor.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine, where Eleanor will be laid to rest next to her late husband, Ike. Memorial donations may be made to The Lamp Memory Care Center, 64 Lisbon Road, Lisbon, ME 04250.
