- Elaine M. Small, 93, wife of the late Harlan F. Small, died peacefully on January 28, 2018, at her home in Bangor. She was born on April 26, 1924, in Bangor, daughter of Norman E. and Ethel Whitney of Bangor.
Elaine spent many of her younger days traveling to various military posts with her parents allowing her rich experiences across the country. After returning to and settling in Bangor, she met her future husband, Harlan F. Small, also of Bangor. She was an active member of Tuscan Chapter #148 OES of Bangor and supported her husband's many masonic activities. Keeping in touch with family, friends, and neighbors was important to Elaine and she also found time to volunteer at some local schools and elderly care facilities. She loved Christmastime and especially enjoyed decorating her home with newly acquired items.
Elaine was predeceased by an infant daughter, Margaret, and her husband, Harlan. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Lay of Bangor and her children, Bob, Patti and her husband, Brooks, and Duke. Her son, David and his wife, Deborah, of Old Town, their children, son Harlan and his wife, Jessica Joy, daughter, Jessica and her wife, Perri. Elaine's daughter, Debra and her husband, Dave and their son, D.J; also, Elaine's youngest son, Norman. She will be sadly missed by all of her grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, friends and grand pets, which she loved to be updated on their antics.
A service for the family only will be held at Brookings-Smith, Bangor, with interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Those who wish to remember Elaine in a special way may gifts in her memory to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, 263 Main Street, Bangor, ME 04401.
