Edward's Story

MILLINOCKET AND CHESTER - Edward J. Whitney, Jr., 92, husband of the late Laraine (Stratton) Whitney, passed away March 2, 2015 at a Millinocket hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1923 in Chester, the son of Edward J. Whitney, Sr. and Blanche (Jordan) Whitney and graduated from Winn High School. He lived in Chester until 1965 when he and Laraine moved to Millinocket. Along with farming, he worked for the Bangor and Aroostook R R driving a mail truck, drove bus for 7 years and for several years was an engineer for the railroad until his retirement in 1986. Eddie drove the bus to Boston when Stearns High School basketball team won the New England Championship in 1963. Ed and Loraine spent several winters in Florida and many summers at their cottage on Center Pond. He enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden at Center Pond and at their Millinocket home. In his younger years, Eddie flew airplanes and had motorcycles. He was a 50 year member of Master Masons Pine Tree Lodge No. 172 AF & AM and a 56 year member of United Transportation Union (life membership.) He was a loving father and grandfather to his children Dan and Diane Whitney and Joey and Bernette Whitney; grandchildren Scott and Rachael Whitney, Mark and Kellie Whitney, Donna and Mike Bard, Darren and Deena Whitney; great-grandchildren Ryan, Riley, Devin, Dane, Mia and Leo; great-great-grandchildren Emma and Brooklyn. He also leaves a sister-in-law Justine Stratton, several nieces and a nephew.

In addition to his parents and his wife of 66 years, Laraine, he was predeceased by a granddaughter Heather, sisters and brothers in law Audrey and Bill Thorpe and Madeline and Ed Batchelder.

At Ed's request there will be no calling hours or funeral. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Lincoln Cemetery.
