RUMFORD - Edward H. Powell, 91, died Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Rumford Community Home in Rumford. He was formerly of Swett Avenue in Mexico, Maine.
He was born in Braintree, MA on March 9, 1923, the son of Thomas H. and Bertha (Drysdale) Powell, and graduated from Mexico High School Class of 1940. Edward also served as a PFC with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945 including tours in Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was very proud of the fact he marched across Europe and never fired a shot.
He worked as a lab technician and retired after more than 40 years from Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford.
Edward was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mexico and was currently a member of the Peru United Baptist Church.
He was married in Mexico, Maine on January 6, 1943 to F. Irene Shurtleff who died in West Paris, Maine on October 18, 2012.
Survivors include 4 daughters Jean Oliveto and husband Frank of St. Petersburg, FL, Patty Kaulback and husband Victor of Maple Ridge, Vancouver, Canada, Peggy Hunt and husband Greg of Hampden, ME, and Polly Laskey and husband Sam of Mexico; a son Jeff Powell and wife Joann of Bradenton, FL; 8 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter; and was predeceased by 2 children Keith and baby daughter Janet, brothers Thomas and Wilbur, and a sister Elizabeth.
