Lincoln - Edmund Francis Vandall has passed away In Portland, ME. He was born to Edwin Donald Vandall and Ernestine (LaRoque) Vandall in Trenton, ND. The oldest of eight children, he grew up in Wolfpoint, MT before enlisting in the Air Force in 1948 where he earned his wings as a radio operator in B29 bombers. He was proud to be Native American (Metis) belonging to the Belcourt, North Dakota Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians. Some may still have his wirligigs and birdhouses created by "Chasing Hawk". Ed was lifelong educator. He obtained his BA and MS from Westfield State University, continuing his education at the University of Maine. He was a teacher/principal in Windsor, CT, Pittsfield, ME, Mattawamkeag, ME, Indian Township, ME, and Millinocket, ME. He had a unique, caring style, as anyone who had him as a teacher can attest. He is predeceased by the love of his life, Carolyn Nancy Vandall of Westfield, MA whom he married on April 25, 1953. Together, they researched their ancestries, tracing both bloodlines back to the 1600s. He loved to sing and play the guitar and fiddle with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting, music and academic events. Ed was also and artist. He once had a painting stolen from his easel by Prince, the white workhorse, owned by Judy Vail's father in Brockway, NB. He enjoyed his "Travels with Gene" in true Steinbeck fashion, on their many adventures across the U.S. and Canada. He is survived by his brother, Gene Vandall and fiancé, Judy Vail of Wales, MA, Lincoln, ME and Brockway, NB. Also by his sister Deleraine Hauss, of Rochester, NY, his daughters, Suzanne Tash and son-in-law, Thomas Tash Jr. of Lincoln, and Aimee McCarthy and son-in-law Bill McCarthy Jr. of Lincoln. Grandchildren, Tanner McCarthy and Natalie McCarthy of Lincoln and stepgrandchildren, Tomas Tash III of Winthrop and Hailey Crabtree of Orrington, great stepgranddaughter, Beckett Tash and his many nieces and nephews and their families whom he adored. As well as his wife, Carolyn, he was predeceased by his parents, Edwin Donald Vandall and Ernestine (LaRoque) Vandall of Wolf Point, MT. Also by his siblings, Leroy, Mary Anderson, Joey, Lyle and Johnny Vandall. A graveside service is planned for Spring in Brockway, NB.
