Earl's Story

NEWPORT - Earl Grover Gray, Jr, 81, died December 20, 2015 at his residence. He was born February 1, 1934 in Newport, the only child of Earl and Lottie (Connor) Gray, Sr.

Earl served in the United States Air Force for over 24 years as an aircraft mechanic. He completed many tours overseas during the Vietnam and Korean wars, including Thailand, Guam and Okinawa. He served stateside in Kansas, Georgia, New Jersey, Hawaii, Alaska, and Washington. Following his retirement with the USAF, Earl was employed at the Irving Tannery in Hartland for 19 years as a maintenance supervisor.

He loved hunting, fishing and camping. Earl was a member and volunteered with the Barrows-Skidgel American Legion Post #105 for over 38 years, and attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Newport. He was a good friend who was willing to help anyone in need. He was a kind soul who always took good care of his family and loved them very much, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Earl was happily married for over 59 years to Sarah W. Gray, who predeceased him October 3, 2014, and had 5 children. He is survived by 3 daughters and their husbands, Susan and Mike McGeough of VA, Jutta and Steven Bennett II of Plymouth, and Ann and Cliff Dupray, Sr. of Dixmont; a son, Earl Thomas Gray and partner Joan Levesque of Newport; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter Evelyn Lister.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, where funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, Dec. 24th, with the Rev. George Finnemore officiating. Burial will be in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, One Bowdoin Mill Island, Topsham, ME 04086.
