Donald Wayne's Story
- Donald Wayne Hodgdon, lovingly referred to as "The Patriarch" by his family, left this world at 11:00 a.m. on October 11, 2017. Wayne lived a long and good life as a very healthy and active man. He just turned 93 in August and was still as sharp as a tack with his memory and humor. He died a peaceful and good death at home surrounded by and cared for by family. It feels as if it is the end of an era, and he will be greatly missed.
Wayne was born August 10, 1924 to Donald R. Hodgdon and Julia Babb and grew up in Levant, Maine. He was a gifted high school baseball pitcher and graduated from Bangor High School in 1942. He joined the Marines and was part of the South Pacific Campaigns from 1942-1945. He was always proud to be a Marine and was usually seen wearing a Marine tee-shirt or cap. After the war he married Connie Ouellette and they moved to Waterville where they had their son, David, in 1956 and their daughter, Debra, in 1957. Wayne was active in the Waterville community. He co-founded Goddard, Hodgdon, and Mitchell Insurance and Real Estate Agency, was President of the Maine Independent Insurance Agents Association. He was also an avid golfer, active in Waterville Country Club and serving as President.
In 1978 Wayne and Joanne Williams married and had a son, Donald in 1979. They moved to Florida in 1981 and built a life in Pinellas Park where they remained for over 30 years. Wayne was always involved in Donald's baseball teams, and worked part-time for years for Winn Dixie Corporation saying that it kept him fit well into his 80's. Joanne died in 2015 and Wayne moved back to Maine where he lived out the rest of his life in the midst of family in Mt. Vernon. He has shared many stories over the years and was a valuable resource with his vivid memory for details of times past. He also loved following sports and could tell you anything you wanted to know about the players and the teams.
Wayne was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his oldest son David, and his wife, Elizabeth Luckraft, by his daughter Debra and her husband, Charles Baeder, by his youngest son, Donald, and his wife, Heather. He also leaves a number of grandchildren who loved him very much: Ben Hodgdon and his wife, Brittany Wagoner, Collyn Baeder, and her husband, Jesse Simpson, Kate Sargent and her husband, Macgregor Sargent, Cody Baeder and his wife, Sarah Hassan, and his two youngest grandchildren, Landon Hodgdon and Elle Hodgdon. He also had the joy of meeting his first great-grandchild, Adeline Sargent. Wayne is also survived by his sister, Shirley Hatch, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a funeral service with military honors at The Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive in Augusta on Monday, November 27, at 9:00 a.m. Please join us if you are able to attend.
