Donald's Story

FORT FAIRFIELD - Donald H. Hetherington, 85, husband of the late Tressa (VanBuskirk) Hetherington, passed away Friday morning, October 31, 2014, at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, after an extended illness. He was born May 15, 1929, in Beechwood, New Brunswick, the son of Hoyt and Georgie (Kinney) Hetherington.

He moved to Fort Fairfield at an early age and was raised by his father Hoyt and wife, Anne. Don attended the local school system and left school early to try farming. He then joined the U.S. Army and was transferred to Kaiserslantern, Germany, serving from 1951 to 1953, during the Korean War. Upon his discharge from the military, he became employed at the Birds Eye Division of General Foods Corp., Caribou, as a maintenance field mechanic. He later transferred to the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Corp (A&P), Fort Fairfield, later the Interstate Foods Corp. in their maintenance department until his retirement in 1990. Don was a former Boy Scout troop leader, a former member of the Fort Fairfield VFW and was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Fort Fairfield, serving several years on the vestry. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and growing a great garden. He was married to Tressa VanBuskirk on December 21, 1956, and they enjoyed fifty-six years of marriage.

In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by his wife, Tressa, on September 12, 2013; and in-laws, Marie and Meredith Bragdon, William and Norma Van Buskirk, and Clara Porcello. He is survived by his niece, Joyce Milton and her husband, Lester, of Fort Fairfield and Contoocook, NH; nephews, William VanBuskirk and his wife, Sylvia, of Brewer, William Bragdon and his wife, Rose, of Bangor; two great-nephews, Tobin VanBuskirk of Portland and Lester Milton Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, of Concord, New Hampshire; two great-nieces, Angela Gordon and her husband, Dave, of Contoocook, New Hampshire, and Dawn Michelis and her husband, Nathan, of Somerville, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind a special brother-in-law, James Porcello of Suffield, CT.

In keeping with Don's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 170 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Kevin Kinsey officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held at the church hall, following the interment service.
