Augusta AND Glenburn - Donald Casement Berry, 93, passed away quietly and peacefully on July 19, 2017, at the Togus Springs VA Center. He was born in Burnham, Maine, on April 21, 1924, the son of Jerome "Jack" Berry and Plooma Victory. He was one of thirteen children and grew up on the farm in Charleston, ME.
He attended grade school in Charleston, ME, and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute, Class of 1942. He was very athletic and loved sports. He was the quarterback of the HCI football team and a member of the HCI Basketball team that won the State title in 1942. He was named All State in the tournament.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944, and proudly served in General George Patton's Third Army, 26th Infantry. He saw combat in the Rhineland and Central Germany, and was stationed at Nuremberg during the Trials.
He worked for many years for Mecaw Industries, selling building materials to General Contractors and paper companies throughout Maine. He owned and operated the Mile High Restaurant in Charleston in the 1970s. He worked for Darlings in Bangor for several years prior to his retirement in 1989.
He had many interests and his favorite was gardening. He had a green thumb and spent many hours in his garden, loving every minute of it. He also loved animals of all kinds, sports, traveling and history. He was a wonderful story teller and a keen observer, who had a sharp wit and loved to laugh. He enjoyed spending time with friends and was always there to lend a helping hand when it was needed.
He was an active member and a past commander in the VFW and proudly marched in the Veteran's Day parades in Bangor for many years. He was also a member of the Charleston Historical Society.
Donald is survived by his partner in life, Sophia Wirta; her daughter, Kathy Petrucci; sons, Mark Wirta and wife, Marnie, and Robert Wirta and wife, Theresa; grandchildren, Chris and Jennifer Petrucci, Nicholas, Daniel, Sophia and Alexander Wirta; son, David Berry and wife, Linda; stepchildren, Wendy Lambeth, Shannon Flewelling, Torrey Weaver and Brooke Powers; granddaughter, Michele O'Connell and husband, William; great-grandchildren, Brenna, Kyle and Shawn O'Connell; nephew, Brian Berry and Frank Eagan; nieces, Cathy Burke and Barbara Devlin; great-niece, Tammy Eagan; nieces, Mary Fowler and husband, John, and their children, Jennifer Thompson and Joleen Lilley, and Barbara Pettit; and lifelong friend, Morris Strout. He was predeceased by his grandson, Ian Berry; best friend, Nicholas George; and Kathy Petrucci's husband, Norf, in 2015.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center Street, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Family Reception Center of Brookings-Smith, 163 Center Street, Bangor, immediately following the service Thursday.
