David Wayne Vaznis

January 14, 1945 - December 06, 2018

Millinocket and Meath, Ireland David Wayne Vaznis passed away in the comfort of his home at Katahdin Cottage, Kilmessan, Co. Meath, Ireland on December 6, 2018. Dave was born on January 14, 1945, to Emily (Subatch) and Frank Vaznis in Millinocket, Maine.
He was a graduate of Stearns High School, class of 1963. He was the co-captain of the 1963 Stearns High School basketball team which won the New England Championship. He was selected to the All Maine Schoolboy Basketball team that year. He also played on the high school baseball team and often joked about having numerous no-hitter games, a great feat had he been a pitcher. Dave was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching the Red Sox or any other baseball game on TV at his Ireland home. He also was a NCAA basketball fan and looked forward to March Madness each year. Dave attended Ricker and Gorham College before entering the US Air Force.
While stationed in England he met the love of his life and future wife Angela Boyle. He returned to his home town following his discharge from the Air Force and was employed at Great Northern Paper Company. Angela followed him to Millinocket where they married in 1973. In 1983 they experienced a heartbreaking loss with the death of their infant son Rory. In 1996 Dave left his job at Great Northern and he and Angela moved to Ireland to care for Angela's ailing mother. Dave was readily well received by all the people in the small village of Kilmessan. With his large six feet five inch frame and friendly mild manner he became known throughout the village as the gentle giant from the US.
He occasionally enjoyed tipping a pint or two in the local Irish pub with his Irish friends. He joked about losing an inch in height over the years due to looking down to Angela and other Irish friends who were much shorter in height. He touched the hearts of many and will be missed by his Irish nieces, nephews and friends. Although miles away in Ireland Dave always kept a place in his heart for family and friends in his beloved home town. A funeral mass was held in Kilmassen on December 8th.
Dave was predeceased by his son, Rory; parents, Frank and Emily; sister, Virginia; brothers, Robert and Donald; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bridget and Jim Boyle; sister-in-law, Rose, Earlene, and Hilda; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Gay. Dave will be greatly missed by his loving wife and best friend, Angela; brother, Frank and wife, Hazel; brother, Ernest; brother, Lawrence and wife, Gloria; brother, William and wife, Trina; sister-in-law, Judy Cyr; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Chris and Mary O'Halloran; and the many nieces and nephews in the US.
Arrangements in care of Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St. Millinocket, Maine 04462. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lamsonfh.com.
