LEBANON, NH (FORMERLY OF ST. ALBANS ME AND W. PAWLET VT) - Charles J. Bauer, 87, son of Charles and Geraldine B. (Todd) Bauer, died in his daughter's home surrounded by family on December 15, 2015. He was born June 26, 1928. He was predeceased by his precious wife of 34 years, Myrna, who died Dec. 25, 2001. As an only child, Charlie always felt fully embraced by Myrna's large family, the Denbow's, mostly of Maine. Together they lived a full happy life on the farm in Vermont and in their home in Maine.
Charlie grew up in Glen Head, NY. He moved to Vermont with his parents when they purchased the Vermont farm in 1948. Over the years he worked the farm, sold World Book Encyclopedia, worked for Metropolitan Life, worked at Norton Sealants in Granville, NY, Vermont State Parks Service in Bomoseen, VT and the Thick N Thin Lumber Co. in St. Albans, ME.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. He was a jack-of-all trades that he learned from his father working on the farm. He had a wonderful, wry, sometimes naughty, sense of humor which stayed with him through the progression of his Alzheimer's. As long as he was surrounded by white haired middle aged women his face would be smiling and his toes would be tapping. He always carried a pocket full of wintergreen mints ready to hand out. Later in life he became dear friends with Joyce Bowman whose family also embraced him. She became a very dear friend to us all.
First and foremost Charlie was a sweet gentleman through and through. He was a man of integrity who believed in hard work. Remember him with a cap on his bald head, a smile on his face, a pipe in his mouth and a dog at his feet.
He is survived by his children Nancy & Rick Smelik of Hartford, NY, Eugene & Sun Bauer of Kempner, TX, Linda & Gerald Parent of North Port, FL, Mark & Cathy Bauer of Lake Luzerne, NY, Greg Bauer of Laconia, NH, Sharon & John Cameron of Lebanon, NH, Bruce Bauer & Paul of Warner, NH, along with 15 Grandchildren and 8 Great-Grandchildren.
A gathering is planned on December 28, 2015 4:30 pm, prayer service at 5:30 with buffet to follow, story telling throughout, at the Ramada Bangor, 357 Odlin Rd, Bangor ME 207-947-6961.
