Charleen's Story

HANCOCK - Charleen B. Springer, 89, passed away surrounded by family June 2, 2015, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. he was born December 30, 1925, in her family home in Franklin, Maine.

Daughter of Theodore and Verna (M.) Bragdon, she graduated from Patten Academy in 1943, and soon after she graduated, she married the love of her life, Luther. Together they had six children. Charleen was a very active woman and did many fun things with her family and friends, from swimming in the summer to ski trips in the winter. Charleen and Luther loved playing golf and taking trips to see two of their sons caddy on the PGA Golf Tour. She also enjoyed sewing and making crafts, always making something for family and friends. She worked in a local Nursing Home in Ellsworth for 10 years as an Activity Director, always bringing a resident or two home for lunch or dinner. She enjoyed picnics at Hancock Point, and taking the family boat named Chardy Lou out to Uncle Ted and Aunt Estelle's camp on Donnell's pond. Charleen was the oldest member of the Hancock Women's club, being much more active in younger years, and coached the girls' basketball team at the grammar school for a season or two. She was a member of Eastern Star and one of the oldest members of The Union Congregational Church of Hancock, Maine.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Luther, after 62 years of marriage in 2005, and their daughter, Charla, in 1964.

She is survived by her oldest son, Theodore "Teddy" of Bangor; her sons, John and Jeffrey, both of Hancock; son, James and his wife, Cheryl of Raleigh, North Carolina; daughter, Jacquelyn and her husband, Lewis of Windham, Maine; five grandchildren, Camille Taylor and her husband, Darren of Otis, James Springer and his wife, Benita, Ashley, Joshua and Michael Ryan.

Many thanks to the staff at Golden Acres, especially Andrea, who went the extra mile for Charleen. Thank you to Donna and Cathy at Maine Coast Memorial where she passed peacefully and comfortably with her family by her side.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, June 5th at 3:00pm at the Union Congregational Church of Hancock.
