Mattawamkeag and Bangor - Cary 'Boots' Lyon, 92, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2017. Boots was born September 5, 1924, in Medway, ME, to Lyman and Clara Lyon. A member of the Greatest Generation, he proudly served in World War II with 110th Field Artillery, D Battery, and participated in the D-Day Invasion of Omaha Beach. Following the war, he returned to Maine and spent 20 years working for The Great Northern Paper Mill. He then accepted a position at New Garden State Paper Mill, where after 17 years as Superintendent, retired due to health reasons.
He resided the last five years receiving care from his beloved granddaughter, Connie and her husband, Jamie Higgins. A special and unique man, his love for family and friends had no bounds. He reveled in telling many stories to the delight of all, creating many special memories filled with love, joy and laughter. These many happy times will not dim with the passage of time.
Boots was predeceased by his wife, Geneva Lyon, and only daughter, Jean (Lyon) Trafton; one brother, Harrison Lyon and two sisters, Frances and Anita.
He is survived by his two granddaughters, Connie Higgins and husband, Jamie of Bangor, Sarah Nevells and husband, Brian, of Bangor, great- grandchildren, Erika Darrah and husband, Brian, Sean Stone and partner, Samantha Newton, Jacob and Madison Nevells, all of Bangor; two step- great granddaughters, Katelyn and Zoe; step- Children, Alwyn Smith Sr. and wife, Carmel, and their children, of FL, Carole Smith, of NY. Nephews. Lauren Chesley and his wife, Cecile, and Cliffy Webb, who was dear to Boots' heart and one special cousin, Terry Lyon; beloved friends, Judy and Donnie Wyman, Shelly and Matt Farrington and their entire family as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the Eastern Maine Medical staff for their professionalism and compassion.
