Carroll's Story

BAR HARBOR - Carroll O. Spooner, MSGT. USAF RETIRED, 77, died April 28, 2014, at the MDI hospital. He was born Nov. 4, 1936, in New Sweden, the son of Cecil and Sigrid (Akerson) Spooner.

Carroll was a 23-year veteran in the U.S. Air Force. He received several medals including the Meritorious Service Medal. After retiring from the military he worked for the Orrington School system and Sherman's Book Store in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor.

He is survived by his wife, Gail (Lambert) (Hanscom) Spooner of Bar Harbor, daughter, Lynn Coombs and her husband, Melvin of Orrington, two sons, Greg and his wife, Judy of Hammond, LA, David of Fayetteville, NC, two adopted sons, Robert and Brian, three stepsons, David Hanscom of Arlington, WA, Jeffrey Hanscom and friend, Bernadette Williams of Virginia Beach, VA, and Scott Hanscom of Baltimore, MD, several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, that he loved and enjoyed watching grow up. He is also survived by three brothers, Erwin, Donald and his wife, Donna, all of Bucksport, Peter and his wife, Ellen of Brewer, three sisters, Joyce Burrill of Bangor, Erlene and her husband, Percy Harding of Bar Harbor, Esther of Bucksport, brother-in-law, Stanley Bennett of Bucksport and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Helen Bennett.

A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Brewer chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Peter Remick officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service. A committal service with military honors will take place following the service at Riverview Cemetery, Bucksport.
