Carol's Story

Text size

Carol Jeanne (Marrs) Cummings passed away peacefully Thursday July 21, 2016 surrounded by her loving family after courageously battling breast cancer. A truly beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, Nana, teacher, and friend, Carol was a generous soul who went above and beyond to touch the lives of many.

She was born in Salem, Massachusetts on January 26, 1954, daughter of the late Leo and Lorraine (Gallagher) Marrs. Carol graduated from Mattanawcook High School in 1972. Immediately following high school she was courted by the love of her life. After moving to Vermont with the Marrs family, Carol and Danny's love brought her back to the Howland area where they cherished 41 years of marriage together.

She earned her Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education from Holyoke Community College and her Bachelors in Elementary Education from University of Maine, Orono. She taught in the MSAD #31 school system for 35 years with the majority of her career working with generations of young Kindergarten and Pre-K minds. Because of her kind demeanor and fun spirit in the classroom, she helped hundreds of kids excel in learning and life. Carol reached out in many ways through the local churches and organizations, volunteering her time within the community offering a helping hand.

Carol enjoyed spending each and every holiday, birthday, and celebration by hosting and welcoming all into her beautiful home and spending summers by the pool. As an avid reader, Carol kept a journal of all the books she read and connected with her parents and sisters about the best books to grab at the library. She also loved to play cards and games with her family and friends, most of all Scrabble. One of her greatest pleasures later in life was sharing her love of reading, games, and cards with her sweet grandsons.

Her joy of all the great things in life will forever be passed down through her surviving family members including her husband, Danny Cummings of Howland; her daughter, son-in-law and grandsons Leah, Viet, Nathan and Dylan Ly of Westbrook, her son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter-to-be, Matthew, Amanda, and Vivian Cummings of Bangor. She was also very close to her siblings and is survived by her sister, Paula Downs of Lee, her sister and brother-in-law, Patty and Daniel Moors of Lincoln, her sister, Laurie Marrs of Williamstown, MA, and her brother and fiancé, Daniel Marrs and Christina Liff of Rochester, NH. Carol cherished her relationships with all her extended family including cousins, nieces, nephews and countless special friends. She was predeceased by her wonderful parents and in-laws, Leo & Lorraine (Gallagher) Marrs and Raymond & Muriel (Blake) Cummings.

On Monday, July 25 at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Howland, hours of visitation will be held from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM followed by the memorial service at 3:00 PM and a reception immediately after. Guest book condolences can be left at www.clayfuneralhome.com.

In lieu of flowers, Carol's wish was to establish an educational memorial scholarship at Penobscot Valley High School. The family will share details on how to donate at a later date. Friends may also donate to the Lafayette Cancer Center in Brewer in Carol's memory. "Your presence we miss, your memories we treasure, loving you always, forgetting you never."
