Captain Lester's Story

EXETER - Captain Lester E. Slate 92, died December 19, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Chicopee, MA on July 13, 1922 the son of Lewis and Agnes (Gunn) Slate.

He joined the service in 1943 and made a life-long career in the Navy, flying many missions during WW II for which he received many awards. He finished his service career in the Coast Guard where he flew search and rescue planes and helicopters. He was recently awarded over due medals and ribbons by Senator Angus King. He married Maxine Pushor in 1944 and had a family of three children. He traveled extensively with his wife and children by his side. Flying was his profession but hunting and fishing were his passions. He enjoyed these with family members and friends until the last few years when his health prevented it. He loved telling stories about his experiences in the war as well as early childhood memories and recent events. During the last years he enjoyed and tended his 100+ blueberry bushes on his land in Exeter.

He was predeceased by his wife, Maxine of 66 years, his son, Lester E. Slate II "Skipper", several brothers, sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law. He is survived by his daughters, Sue Slate of Exeter, Sally Mitton and her husband, Bill of Augusta, grandchildren; Bill Bligh of Exeter, Travis Mitton and his wife, Kim of Winterport, Stacy Cote and her husband, Tony of Hollis, great-grandchildren; Bailey and Caden Bligh, three brothers and their wives; Ronald and Peggy Slate, Donald and Irma Slate, Robert and Joann Slate, several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Sunday Dec. 28, 2014 at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport, at 1 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. by funeral services with Rev. David Ray Sr. officiating. Spring Burial with Military Honors will at the Village Cemetery Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to First Radio Parish Church of America, c/o WCSH6, One Congress Square, Portland, Me 04101, or to the Stetson Union Church 1059 Mullen Rd., Stetson, Me 04488, or a charity of your choice.
