Bonnie's Story

Text size

Auburn - Bonnie Burleigh Bridges, 67, died peacefully on Nov. 9, 2017, at the Auburn Hospice House with her loving sisters by her side. She was born in Bangor on February 19, 1950, daughter of Clarence (Doc) and Marie Burleigh. She spent her childhood in East Corinth and was a 1968 graduate of Central High School.
She worked many years at Oak Island Seafood in Rockland until an accident in 2003 left her paralyzed and wheelchair bound. Bonnie handled her disability with dignity and grace, never losing her sense of humor and never feeling sorry for herself. She often would say "there's so many people way worse off than I am." Her only desire was to remain in her own home with her cats, and she was able to do so until the last two weeks of her life.
Bonnie loved watching scary movies, oftentimes failing in her attempt to get anyone to watch them with her! She loved all animals and the fur babies she had throughout her life gave her so much joy. She loved visits from friends and family, often spending hours reminiscing about fun times, especially the year all three sisters and niece Angie flew to Florida to visit our parents. Prior to her injury, she loved walking (which was her only choice as she never got her driver's license, probably because she scared her family so bad when she got her learners permit!). She was a top notch cook and missed being able to whip up a delicious dinner and dessert.
She is survived by her children, Lisa Parker of Hollis, Michael Gormley and partner, Lilliana of Las Vegas, and Jason Gormley and wife, Laura of New Gloucester, sisters, Diana Caldwell and husband, Larry of Madison, and Susan Shaw and husband, Dick of Hudson, several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by her two cats, Bella and Sophie, and a very special caretaker/friend, Barbara Hutchinson, who went over and above her care for Bonnie, always giving her the best care possible and showing her the true meaning of friendship.
She was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Marie Burleigh, and grandparents, Orville and Geneva Burleigh and Vernon and Della Campbell.
Due to her love of animals, donations will be accepted at the animal shelter of your choice.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Auburn Hospice House and Beacon Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Bonnie and family.
A graveside service will be held at a later date. Per her request, there will be no visiting hours.
