Bangor - Billy Ralph Marshall, 86, passed away on February 19, 2017 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Billy was born December 7, 1930, in Bradford, ME, the son of Stanley A. Marshall and Dorrice (Foss) Marshall and received his education from Bradford, ME schools.
He joined the Army on May 18, 1949, at the age of 18, and attended basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and then went to Fort Belvoir, VA, for engineer heavy equipment operator school. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Fort Benning, GA, 78th Combat Engineer Battalion. In August 1950, he was transferred by troopship to Okinawa, Japan, where he was assigned to Special Category Army Reassigned with Air Force (SCARWAF), supporting the Air Force with runway construction. In March of 1950, he was transported to Suwon Air Base, Korea where he served with Charlie Company of 802nd Engineer Aviation Battalion. He shipped out of Korea, December 31, 1951, to Camp Walker, TX, where he was discharged having served three years, two months, and nineteen days.
After serving his country, Billy returned home and worked in the woods with his brothers, Bob and Bev and friends, Barry McSorley, and George Michaud. He continued to enjoy working in the woods his whole life.
Billy was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, first as a Fireman and then as an Engineer from 1952 to 1992. During a layoff period, he moved his family to Connecticut and was employed by Backlund & Rosenquist Construction as a Carpenter from 1962 to 1966, and then returned to Maine and the CPR.
He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Union 621, the Joseph P. Chaisson Legion Post 41 and a lifetime member of the Korean War Veterans Association and the Clan Keith-USA.
Billy was an avid gardener. In the summer of 1981, he grew a turnip that weighed 31.5 pounds. A photo of him and the turnip were featured in the Boston Globe. He recommended natural fertilizer and had his Herefords pasture on his garden spot in the winter.
Billy is survived his second wife, Diane (York) Marshall; a brother, Bev Marshall of Norwalk, CT; his two sons, Alan Marshall and Dennis and Debbie (Foss) Marshall of Lake Worth, FL; and his three daughters Sandra Marshall and Keith Hart of Newport, ME, Norma Wing and Roger of Vienna, ME and Lorna C. Marshall of Manchester, NH.
He leaves his eight grandchildren, Michelle Robinson of Newport, ME, Jennifer (Rolfe) Hendrix of Columbia, SC, Derek Marshall and Devra Mathis of Gainesville, FL, Kara Marshall of Gainesville, FL, Sean Marshall of Lake Worth, FL, Echo Palmer and Aaron Spiers of Hallowell, ME, Thon Palmer and Angel York of Gardiner, ME and Zara and William Saxton of Brunswick, ME.
He also leaves fifteen great grandchildren, Tiana Robinson and Erik Monroy, of Port Saint Lucie, FL, Zonte, Damen and Vincent Isreal of Newport, ME, Jasmine and Gabriel Hendrix of Columbia, SC, Will Marshall of Gainesville, FL, Josie and Angelina Marshall of Lake Worth, FL, Nicholas Geodecke of China, ME, Karl Koroski of Sidney, ME, Sara and Sasha Spiers of Hallowell, ME, Ava and Clara Saxton of Brunswick, ME.
He is survived by the one great, great grandson that he waited so long for, Valen Monroy.
He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife Lois (Smart) Marshall, his four brothers, Robert, Gordon, and Herbert Marshall and half-brother Earl Palmer, and his grandchildren Travis Ware, Devin Hendrix and Sheena Marshall.
Billy had two beloved dogs and companions in his lifetime, Herbie and Winston.
He loved his family, was a good friend to many, and made everyone feel special.
Billy's family would like to thank the staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center for the care they provided for him during his stay with them.
A spring graveside service with a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
