Betty L. Shaw Joy

November 28, 1932 - October 24, 2018

Veazie Betty L. Shaw Joy, 85, of Veazie died October 24, 2018, at the Maine Veteran's Home in Bangor after an extended period of ill health. Betty was born in Bangor, November 28, 1932, the daughter of Clara (Powers) Spinney.
Betty was the 1951 Salutatorian of Sherman High School. She was a selfless person dedicated to her family, children, stepchildren and grandchildren, as well as anyone in need of assistance. She asked for and expected nothing in return. She was employed as a loyal caregiver at Bangor Mental Health for many years. Her honest direct advice was too often accurate and unfiltered and will keep us laughing with warm memories for many years to come.
Betty's husband, Minard L. Shaw, died of cancer in 1963; husband, Alfred M. Joy "Papa," died with heart disease in 1996. Betty is survived by two sons, Richard Shaw and his partner, Frances Agrell, of Old Town and Robert Shaw and his wife, Paula, of Mapleton; and three stepchildren, Brenda Grondin and her husband, Larry, of Sabattus, Linda Joy of Connecticut and Alfred Joy Jr. of Colorado. She also was the proud grandmother to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Per Betty's wishes, there will be no services. For those who wish, contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or at stjude.org.

The first thing I remembered when I heard of your mother's passing was that she was so gracious to us as children. I remember when she was also our den mother for cub scouts, now that was sometime ago. My thoughts are with you.

My sincere condolences.

Betty and my mother, Harriet, not only worked together at BMHI, but they were also flea market buddies for years. She and my mother did so much together until my mother passed, so I missed seeing her smile at our home.

She will always be a part of our family and will be deeply missed.

Dick, Bob, Linda, Brenda and Butch, your Mom and Stepmom had a heart of gold and was always welcoming and kind to me when we were all kids. She was just a blessing to all who knew her. My sincere condolences to you all.
