Benjamin's Story

Text size

ORONO - Benjamin S. Magaw, born June 28, 1988, died on March 15, 2016. Benjamin was the son of Robert Magaw and Monique Hanson.

Benjamin graduated from Hampden Academy in 2007 and the University of Maine with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Philosophy in 2012. Benjamin was a reckless, carefree child, who mellowed with age. He was very intelligent and excelled at every task that challenged him. Benjamin loved playing hockey and following professional hockey players. When he was 8 years old, he and his father waited two hours in the rain at the Cumberland County Civic Center for the arrival of the Montreal Canadians, so he could get an autograph from his hero, Vladmir Malahkov, but Vladimir was injured and didn't make the trip. He was very disappointed, but still asked his father, "Why didn't you name me Vladimir?" Ben was an avid student when he went to the University of Maine and continued learning after he left school. He had a good work ethic and mostly enjoyed his work.

Benjamin will be eternally missed by his mother, Monique and her husband, Joe; father, Robert and his partner, Nancy; his brother, Jake; Nancy's sons, John and Jeff; and his dog, Katie.

In accordance with Benjamin's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be held 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at Pine Grove Remembrance Center, 1347 Hammond St., Bangor. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ben's favorite charities: the Bangor Humane Society or the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
