Beatrice's Story

JONESPORT - Beatrice Elaine Gray Huntley Urquhart, 83, passed on peacefully, at Sunrise Care Facility, surrounded by her loving family on September 19, 2014. She was born in Addison, September 30, 1930, the daughter of the late Maynard and Florence (Worcester) Gray.

Bea was a loyal member of the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport. There she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Women's Department. She held a high standard of work ethic and integrity, serving as a teacher's aide at the Jonesport Cove School and a sardine packer at the Charlie Stevens Fish Factory in Jonesport, L. Ray Packing Company in Milbridge and as a jewelry sales associate at Ames Department Store in Ellsworth. Bea and her late husband, Philip Huntley, owned and operated the Huntley Lodge in the late 1950's, which later became Rest Haven Nursing Home and is now known as Sunrise Care Facility.

Bea volunteered much of her time in the community, helping to establish and expand the Let's All Have a Merrier Christmas program, which now serves over 400 children in the Downeast Maine area. She also assisted with Meals For ME at Narraguagus Estates in Cherryfield.

She was a gracious hostess, famous for her cooking, especially her old-fashioned molasses cookies. Her hobbies included reading, crosswords, card club, and being an active member of the Indian River Grange.

Bea married Philip Huntley on April 17, 1948 and he predeceased her December 7, 1985. She is also predeceased by a son, Edward Philip Huntley; brothers, Ralph and Kenneth Gray; a special aunt and uncle, Hazel and Calvin Crowley and best friend, Bertha Brown. Bea is survived by her husband of 14 years, Adelmar "Tuddy" Urquhart; two daughters, Mona (Huntley) Taylor and Rhonda Huntley French and husband, Tony; four grandchildren, Corey Taylor and fiancée, Mae Polchies, Robbie Taylor, Holly Swilo and husband, Geoffrey Lagat, Denise Cilley and husband, Jason Cilley; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Taylor, Levite Cilley and Ava Lagat; four sisters, Dorothy Alley, Margaret Lenfestey, Joanne Rathbun and husband, Lee, and Norma Milam and husband, Lew; special sister-in-law, Norma Gray Lydick; aunt and uncle, Kay and Billy Drisko; close friends, Arlene Guptill and Etta Drisko and husband, Teckey; friend and roommate, Virginia Graham. She had five very special nieces and nephews, which she grew up with and considered as brothers and sisters. She will also be sadly missed by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

The family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to Dr. Ryan and the staff of Sunrise Care Facility for their exceptional loving care and respect.

A celebration of Bea's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 24 at the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
