- Barbara P. Martin, born March 4, 1922, daughter of Dr. Alfred M. Perry and Florence H. Perry, died peacefully on June 15, 2017, in Blue Hill, Maine.
With her four sisters and brothers, Barbara grew up in Bangor, where her father was professor of the New Testament at Bangor Theological Seminary. Barbara earned bachelor's and master's degrees in biology from Smith College, where she met her future husband John B. Clark II, of Westport, Connecticut. After World War II, they married and lived first in the GI Village at Amherst College and later in the Boston area, while John completed his studies at Amherst and Harvard. In 1959 the couple and their young family settled in Marietta, Ohio, where John taught at Marietta College. Following John's death in 1967, Barbara began as a lecturer, teaching freshman labs at Marietta College, and retired as Emerita Associate Professor of biology in 1984. In 1985 Barbara married lawyer William T. Martin and moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where the couple enjoyed hiking, birding, reading, traveling, their dinner group and spending time with their large extended family. After Bill's death in 1994, Barbara returned to live year-round in South Brooksville, Maine. In 2011, Barbara was briefly hospitalized and subsequently lived at Island Nursing Home on Deer Isle until her final illness.
She is survived by her daughters, Margaret of South Brooksville and Susanna of Holden, Maine; her son, John and daughter-in-law, Heather, of Toronto, Ontario; and her grandchildren, Rebecca, Megan, Emily, Trevor and Gillian.
A memorial service will be held in August.
