Hampden - Barbara (Kierstead) Dow, 91, passed away on February 27, 2018, with her family by her side. She was born on June 4, 1926, in New London, CT, the daughter of Edgar J. and Ida M. (Carter) Kierstead.
Barbara attended schools in Mapleton, graduating from Mapleton High School class of 1943 and NMVTI Practical Nursing Program in 1965. She married E. Keith Dow in 1946. Three daughters were born to them, Gayle M. Eiler, Kathy L. Boutot, and Ruthanne J. Frost. Barbara loved nursing at A.R. Gould, office of Robert Sommerville, MD, Presque Isle, Thayer Hospital in Waterville while they lived in Clinton and Bangor City Nursing Center after moving to Hampden. She made valuable friends through work and the Maine Practical Nursing Association where she served as President for several years.
Barbara was a member of the Hampden Congregational Church, Bangor Nursing and Rehab Auxiliary and a former member of the Bangor-Brewer Christian Women's Club. She was an active volunteer at the Hampden Food Cupboard and the Bangor Nursing and Rehab Activities.
The family would like to thank Dana, Priscilla, and Marilyn from St. Joseph Hospice, Visiting Angels, the staff at Phillips Strickland and Brewer Rehab.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018, at the Hampden Congregational Church, 101 Main Rd. North, Hampden, with the Rev. William Walsh, pastor officiating. Spring interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden.
