Text size

Manhattan, NY, and Orono - Arthur Weston, Jr., 93, died 30 May 2017 at his home in Manhattan. He was born 21 June, 1923, to Katherine Florence (Stacy) Fowler Weston and Arthur Weston, Sr. of East Vassalboro, Maine.
He was educated at Coburn Classical Academy in Waterville, ME, graduated from Casco High School (1941), earned a BA (U Maine 1949), and (from Columbia) MA (1950) and PhD (1952). His fields of study included Education, History, Health Science, Physical Education and Athletics. He married Corinne Kit Comstock 17 Oct., 1947.
Arthur was a professor and department chair at Rice University (1952-1962) and Brooklyn College (1962-1988). He published four books and over fifty articles.
He served in the Navy during WWII, flying as the engineer/copilot out of Brunswick Naval Air Station on antisubmarine patrol and flew as the engineer/navigator from the aircraft carrier Wasp in the Pacific Fleet and later in the Atlantic. He was involved in administration of the Olympic Games (1952-2003), served two terms on the International Olympic Committee, and spent summers (1963-1973) at the Ministry of Sport in London. He had been a lifetime member of the New York Athletic Club.
Arthur grew up on a dairy farm with a sugar maple orchard. He had great concern for animals and supported the North Shore Animal League. His horse Lucky, and his dogs "Chumly" of Vassalboro, Sandy of Casco, and Archie of Manhattan were greatly loved.
He was a kind and considerate gentleman. He was always present with each person he greeted, even in very intense and confusing situations. He listened and he helped.
We are very grateful for the caring support of Mrs. Jean Butler, faithful nurse and companion to him and to Cody since 2000.
He was predeceased by his wife, his parents and his sister Mrs. Olive Florence (Fowler) Burgess. He is survived by his niece Mrs. Georgette Sanders (Dr. Georgette Olive Burgess) and her husband Dr. Gary D. Sanders of Gainesville, Florida.
