Bangor - Arthur Edwin "Ed" McKenzie, 91, died on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at his home in Tavares, Florida.
Ed was born in Bangor, Maine, on June 11, 1925, the oldest son of Hugh A. and Alice Hazelton McKenzie. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Avis G. Brann, on October 16, 2005.
Ed attended Bangor schools and graduated from Bangor High School, class of 1943. Shortly after graduation he joined the United States Army and served in the 27th Tank Battalion of the 20th Armored Division in Europe during World War II. After World War II he came back to Bangor, where he attended Husson College and graduated with a degree in Accounting and Auditing in 1948. While still a student at Husson he married Avis G. Brann on June 21, 1947. After graduation, Ed worked for Getchell Ice Company in Brewer, Maine, until 1951 when he joined the Bangor Daily News accounting department. During his 40 years with the company, Ed received several promotions, retiring as Senior Vice President, General Manager, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Bangor Publishing Company, publishers of the Bangor Daily News. During his career he served as President of the Greater Bangor Chamber of Commerce and served for several years as a member of the Board of Trustees of Eastern Maine Medical Center and as a director of Eastern Maine Healthcare. He also served as a Trustee of Husson College and was named Husson's Alumni of the year in 1988. He was very active in the Bangor Area Kiwanis for many years and often told stories of time spent collecting donations for the annual Kiwanis Auction. Before moving to Florida, Ed was a member of Columbia Street Baptist Church, where he faithfully served in many capacities through the years, including as a Brigade leader, member of the Board of Deacons, Church President and on several Pastoral Search Committees through the years. After moving to Florida he became a member of Midway Baptist Church in Leesburg, FL.
Ed is survived by his son, Stanley E. McKenzie and his wife, Polly, of Oxford, Florida; and his daughter, MaryLou Jameson and her husband, Jim, of Leesburg, Florida. He is also survived by his brother, George and wife, Phyllis, of Tavares, Florida; his brother, James and his partner, Judy Pruzenski, of Bangor, Maine; and his sister, Mary Johnson and her husband, John, of Tavares, Florida. Ed was loved and is survived by five grandchildren, Ian McKenzie, Alicia Jameson, Allison Jameson Baker, Emily Poulin and Tammy Lane; and 7 great-grandchildren, Dayze Gaulin, Chanelle and Ryan Poulin, Brady, Aiden and Zoey Lane and Bentley Ty Buck; many nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Susan McCleskey.
A memorial service for Florida friends and family will be held at Midway Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida, on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at 10 a.m. with Pastors Reginald Dunlap and Dennis Reeves officiating. A second service will be held at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, Maine, on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to are encouraged to make a donation in Ed's name to Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.
