Arlene's Story

Addison - Arlene (Joy) Guptill of Addison passed away peacefully on October 1, 2016, in Harrington. She was born February 28, 1924, in Addison, the daughter of Harvey and Helen (Crowley) Joy. She lived all her life on the Basin Road in Addison and graduated from Addison schools.
In 1942, Arlene married the love of her life, Elliott Guptill Sr. They raised their family in his family home of many years on the Basin Road. Arlene graduated from Washington State Teachers College in Machias and taught for many years at Cape Split, Indian River, SS Nash and D.W. Merritt schools. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport, serving for many years as church secretary. She also was chaplain of the Indian River Grange. She was an active volunteer in her community, and loved baking, shopping trips with the girls, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by he son, Elliott Guptill Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Addison; her daughter, Lynette Guptill and her husband, Alton Leighton Jr., of Waltham; four grandchildren, Richard Guptill and his wife, Leslie, of Addison, Rhonda Hammond and her husband, Parris Jr., of Addison, Brett Perceval and her husband, Gabriel, of Worcester, Mass., and Devin Cough and his wife, Sarah Mullen, of Scarborough; one stepgranddaughter, Amy Emerson and her husband, Shane, of Columbia Falls; five great-granddaughters, Jillian Knowles of Harrington, Jessica Fowler and her husband, Ronald, of Auburn, Harper Perceval of Worcester and Alice and Eleanor Cough of Scarborough; four step-great-granddaughters, Elizabeth, Errin, Candace and Cassandra Thompson of Addison; and one great-great-grandson, Bradley Knowles of Harrington. She is also survived by her brother, George Joy of Jacksonville, Florida; her aunt, Doris Joy of Addison; her sisters-in-law, Joyce Joy of Unionville and Margaret Guptill of Hermon; as well as many special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband; and brothers, John, Alton, Frank and Richard. The family wishes to thank Changing Tides Residential Care facility for their care and support.
Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 4, at the Community of Christ Church, Main Street, Jonesport. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, at the Community of Christ Church. Interment will be held following the funeral at Joyville Cemetery, Basin Road in Addison. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the church in her name, which may be sent to the Community of Christ Church, Main Street, Jonesport, ME 04649.
