ISLAND FALLS - Annie Jane (Porter) Smith, 87, went to be with the Lord on December 11, 2014 in Island Falls. The daughter of Andrew & Sona Grace (Ham) Porter, Annie was born in Sherman Mills on April 7th, 1927.

She graduated from Island Falls High School class of 1945 and was married to the late Carl B. Smith, Maine legislator and the love of her life, for 53 years. Annie Jane was a member of the United Baptist Church of Island Falls and was a past member of Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary. She worked for National Starch and retired after 20 years of service. She loved to quilt and enjoyed getting together with the girls at Barbara Binotto's for quilting class. She belonged to Happy Losers Club for many years and enjoyed all her friends there.

Annie Jane was a devoted wife, beloved mother, meticulous housekeeper, and loyal friend. She loved her home and being a homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren - her life was her family and home. She always demonstrated sacrifice for and dedication to her family and encouraged her children to pursue their educations and dreams. She loved the beauty of nature, often exclaiming about the color of autumn leaves and the sparkling freshness of new fallen snow. She loved to create that beauty in her flower beds and quilting patterns.

Annie Jane is survived by five children, Durand & Terry Smith of Placitas, NM, Pamela & Clint Watson of Westfield, Barry & Lois Smith of Linneus, Sona & Donald Hallett of Island Falls, and Carl II & Debby Smith of Savannah, GA; ten grandchildren: Heather & Rick Valenzuela, Kimberly & Michael Humphries all of Albuquerque, NM; Gretchen & Bill Seegal of Fort Worth, TX, Ryan & Kimberly Smith of Alton, Rachel Smith of Linneus, Jeremy & Kristy Smith of Asheville, NC; Erin Smith of Ft. Annie Jane was blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren: Isaac Valenzuela, Lily and Aidan Humphries, Nola and Adelaide Seegal, Cadie and Carlee Blier, Nicholas Smith, Regan, Porter and Jade Smith, Cohen Smith and Kyah Smith. Annie Jane has one dear sister, Jeanne Smallwood of Patten and one surviving brother, Raymond Porter of Adams, MA. She also has three sisters-in-law, her very special "friend" Leithia "Bubbie" Porter, Carol French, and Marjorie Sverduk, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years; one grandson, Derek Scott Watson; one granddaughter, Stephanie Jane Smith; and eight brothers: Richard, Maurice, Wayne, Oakley, Arthur, Harris, Ralph and Colby Porter.
