Alton's Story

BELFAST - Alton Richard Kenney, 88, died Thursday, February 5, 2015 in Belfast. Born in Waldo on March 25, 1926, he was the son of Herman and Mattie (Whitcomb) Kenney.

He was a 1944 graduate of Crosby High School and during WWII, he served in the U.S. Air force with the 82nd Airborne Division in the European Theatre and was in the Battle of the Bulge.

On May 2, 1959, Alton married Ellen Abram in Bangor. As a Master Electrician, Alton founded Kenney & Gray Inc. which is owned and operated for many years in Belfast. The business continues to operate today under the leadership of his son in law David Gray. Alton also worked as General Manager of Matthews Brothers and taught electrical wiring for many years at the Waldo Vocational School.

Alton was an active communicant at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Belfast where he was a chalice bearer and served on many committees. He also is a member of the Belfast Water District and a member of the Belfast Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris recipient. Alton was a past master of the Phoenix Masonic Lodge #24, a past patron and life member of the Primrose Chapter #152. An active member of the Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor, he had served at Past Puissant Sovereign of the grand Imperial Council of the Red Cross of Constantine of the State of Maine.

Surviving is his wife, Ellen Kenney of Belfast; his daughter Dalenne Gray and her husband, David of Swanville; two grandchildren, Kevin Gray and Melissa Gray; great-grandchildren, Danica Gray; Landon Gray and Annabelle Fisk; three brothers, Herman Kenney, Jr. of CT; Irvin Kenney and his wife, Marilyn of Searsport; and Norman Kenney and his wife, Barbara of Fairfield. He was predeceased by a brother, Teddy Kenney; a sister, Mildred Serra; and three cousins, Van Poland; Orman Whitcomb and Hiram Brown.

A Memorial Eucharist will be held at 11AM, Friday, February 13, 2014 at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 95 Court Street, Belfast with the Rev. Canon Mary Anne Taylor officiating. A celebration of life will be held following the service at the Waldo County Shrine Club, Northport Ave., Belfast. Due to the limited parking at the church please use the shuttle service that is available at the Shrine Club starting at 10:15 am on Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriner's Springfield Hospital for Children, c/o Anah Temple, P.O. Box 735, Bangor, ME 04402 or to St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 95 Court St. Belfast.
